Werner Kupper

Werner Kupper (born August 27, 1926 in Lebus ; † December 20, 2014 in Markkleeberg near Leipzig) was a track and field athlete who was GDR discus thrower and sports champion in 1954, 1955 and 1956 .

Werner Kupper was born on August 27, 1926 in Lebus an der Oder. After finishing school, he went to a non-commissioned officer school to get admission to a civil service career. During the Second World War he was only used briefly in the Netherlands and was taken prisoner by the English. In 1948 he returned to Lebus, did an apprenticeship as a carpenter with his uncle and became a member of the SG Lebus football club. When you took off the badge, you became aware of his talent as a thrower. In 1951 Werner Kupper went to Leipzig, graduated from the university there as a sports teacher and worked primarily as a discus thrower and rower. In the following years he worked as a teacher and became one of the most successful discus throwers in the GDR, winning the championship title in 1954, 1955 and 1956 and was accepted into the GDR national athletics team. After his first wife had two children, he gave up competitive sports and worked as a trainer and sports teacher at the Institute for Physical Education at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig . From 1964 to 1987 he was director of the institute there. In 1989 he took early retirement.

Werner Kupper was married for the second time and has two daughters and two sons. He died on December 20, 2014 after a long and serious illness in a nursing home near Leipzig.
