Werner Lang (engineer)

Richard Werner Lang (* 23. March 1922 in Bermsgrün ; † 17th June 2013 in Zwickau ) was a German engineer and automobile - designer . He is considered one of the fathers of the Trabant 601 .

Career

After completing his training as a moulder in Schwarzenberg / Erzgeb in 1939 . Lang attended the local trade and trade school. From 1940 he studied mechanical engineering and vehicle technology at the engineering school in Zwickau . In 1941 he was drafted into military service as a soldier . In 1944 he found his way to the partisans in Italy . In 1945 he was able to resume his studies in Zwickau and Chemnitz and graduated in 1949 with an engineering examination.

From 1949 he worked for the automobile manufacturer Horch , from 1951 as its technical director. After the merger of the Horch and Audi plants , he became chief designer of the VEB Sachsenring motor vehicle and engine plant in Zwickau in 1958 . In 1966 he became a Dr.-Ing. In 1966 at the TU Dresden with a thesis on problems of constructive preparation in motor vehicle construction and the possibilities of shortening it . PhD . From 1970 to 1983, in the position of Director of Science and Technology at Sachsenring, he was largely responsible for the further development of the Trabant, as far as the GDR leadership allowed. The Trabant 603 , which Lang had helped to develop as chief designer, was prevented by the SED Politburo, and here largely by SED economic boss Günter Mittag .

Until his death, Lang and his wife devoted themselves to documenting the development of the Trabant 601 .
