Werner Pafel (born September 21, 1946 ) is a former German soccer player. He played for 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and BSG Stahl Riesa in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

At the age of 14, Werner Pafel was accepted into the youth department of SC Einheit Dresden . He played his first men's games in the 1964/65 season when he was called up twice in the second-rate GDR league . One season later he was already a regular player with 22 appearances in 30 league games. At the beginning of 1966, the football section of the SC unit was incorporated into the newly formed football sports community (FSV) Lokomotive Dresden . Up to the end of the 1967/68 season Pafel was able to maintain his regular place in the GDR league team, after which he was delegated to the first division club 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig. There he was only used in the first two league games, then he was drafted into the National People's Army for 18 months . During this time he was able to continue playing football in the third-class district league of Dresden with the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Löbau . After his discharge from the army, Pafel joined the upper division Stahl Riesa and was able to play the last three point games of the 1969/70 season there. After that, however, he did not succeed in gaining a foothold in the league team. In 1970/71 he was only used five times as a substitute in the second half of the season. 1971/72 he played nine times in the league, only four times he was in the starting line-up. 1972 Stahl Riesa had to relegate to the GDR league, but achieved immediate promotion. Pafel was involved with twelve league and four promotion games. For the season 1973/74 Pafel was reported again for the league team of BSG Stahl, but only made six appearances in the league, while he was called up with the second team in the GDR league in ten point games. For the 1974/75 season, Pafel returned to the FSV Lok Dresden, which was still represented in the GDR league. There he played 47 of 64 league games played by the end of the 1976/77 season. In the summer of 1977 he resigned from higher-class football, in which he had come to 25 league games (one goal) and 142 GDR league games (28 goals) within thirteen seasons.
