Werner Rösener

Werner Rösener (born August 19, 1944 in Lohne ) is a German historian . From 1996 to 2009 he taught as a professor for Middle and Modern History at the University of Giessen . Rösener focuses on the medieval agricultural, social and constitutional history.

Live and act

Werner Rösener passed his Abitur in 1964 and studied history, classical philology and political science at the universities in Berlin and Freiburg from 1964 to 1972 . In 1972 he received his doctorate at the University of Freiburg under Josef Fleckenstein with a thesis on the medieval history of the Salem Imperial Abbey . From 1974 to 1996 he was a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen. From 1981 to 1996 he held teaching positions at the Universities of Göttingen and Hanover . 1990 took place with the topic "Manorial rule in transition. Investigations into the development of ecclesiastical manors in southwest Germany from the 9th to the 14th century ”his habilitation at the University of Göttingen in the fields of Middle and Modern History. In 1991 he stayed at Wolfson College , Oxford for an extended period . In 1996, Rösener was offered a chair for Middle and Modern History at the University of Giessen, where he taught until his retirement in 2009. Since 1997 he has been a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse .

Rosener's main research interests are agricultural history , changes in the manorial structures and aristocratic rule and culture in the Middle Ages. He presented relevant studies on these topics, some of which were translated into several languages. This includes changing manors. Studies on the development of spiritual manorial rule in southwest Germany from the 9th to 14th centuries (1991), farmers in the Middle Ages (1991), agriculture, agricultural constitution and rural society in the Middle Ages (1992), the farmers in the European history of the Middle Ages (1993) and Introduction to Agricultural History (1997). With Agriculture, Agricultural Constitution and Rural Society in the Middle Ages (1992) Rösener presented the first German-language presentation of modern historical agricultural research for the entire Middle Ages.

In addition to general studies on the Middle Ages and modern times, Rösener's other research interests include, in particular, studies on the history of the Cistercian order , the development of aristocratic rule and court culture, and on the nobility and peasants in the field of tension in medieval society. He examined the medieval and modern history of the Cistercian order in numerous studies and dealt particularly with the economic, spiritual and cultural development of individual Cistercian monasteries. With a view to the development of German history after 1945, he presented a study on the history of the Göttingen Max Planck Institute for History, which from 1956 to 2006 had a strong impact on German historical research.

On the occasion of Rösener's 65th birthday, an international conference took place in Gießen in September 2009 under the title Nobility and Peasants in the Tension of Society of the High and Late Middle Ages . The articles were published in 2012.
