Werner Scheffler (born October 21, 1921 in Dortmund ; † November 16, 2013 in Memmingen ) was a German table tennis official . He is known for the Werner Scheffler system he designed , which determines the order of the games in a competition between two teams of four. He is the bearer of the Federal Cross of Merit .

Career

Werner Scheffler played actively in the club TSV Mengede, which he himself co-founded. What was in demand was his ability to organize a tournament on site, especially at a time when computers were not yet widespread. Here he helped with draws and created schedules for the participants. For example, he was tournament director at the 1959 World Cup in Dortmund.

Since 1958 he has been a member of the sports committee of the West German Table Tennis Association WTTV, from 1969 to 1991 he was sports supervisor in the WTTV, in 1979 he was appointed to the sports committee of the German Table Tennis Association DTTB .

Werner Scheffler System

Werner Scheffler is best known for the game system that bears his name. It regulates a competition between two teams of four, A and B, and stipulates that the four players of each team play up to three singles. The resulting 12 single games are preceded by two double pairings, so that such a competition is over after a maximum of 14 fights. If a team scores eight points beforehand, the competition is decided and canceled.

13. A2 - B4 Einzel 2 von A - Einzel 4 von B
14. A4 - B2 Einzel 4 von A - Einzel 2 von B

The Werner Scheffler System has been anchored in the DTTB's competition regulations (Part D, Section 7) since 1968. In addition to the Scheffler system, there are currently only two other game systems for teams of four: the shorter federal system , which provides for pairings one to ten, and the recently introduced Braunschweig system, in which a team of four can also play against a team of three. In encounters 11 to 14 of the Scheffler system, active players from different pair crosses play against each other.
