Werner Thole

Werner Thole (born February 7, 1955 ) is a German social pedagogue and university professor for educational science with a focus on social work and extracurricular education in the human sciences department of the University of Kassel .

Life

Thole began studying social pedagogy at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in 1974 and then worked as a graduate social pedagogue in extracurricular child and youth work. In addition to his employment, he began a teaching degree in German and history and educational science at the University of Essen . After graduating as a qualified pedagogue, Thole did his doctorate in 1988 at the University of Dortmund . From 1988 to 1992 he worked as a teacher at a vocational school for occupational therapy in Essen and lectured at the same time from 1991 to 1992 at the Halle-Köthen University of Education . In 1992 Thole completed his habilitation at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , and then from 1992 to 1994 he accepted a professorship at the Hildesheim University of Applied Sciences .

He is married and has two children.

Act

In 1994 Thole moved to the University of Dortmund, where he took on a substitute professorship for social education in the field of education and biology. From 1997 to 2000 he was professor for social education at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Since 2000 he has been a professor for educational science at the University of Kassel with a focus on social work and extracurricular education.

His research focuses on theoretical, professional and disciplinary questions of social pedagogy , current and historical childhood and youth research, reconstructive, qualitative social research in the context of socio-educational problems, the theory and practice of child and youth welfare , especially extracurricular child and youth work and selected aspects of the history of social work .

Memberships

In addition to his work as a university lecturer at the University of Kassel, Werner Thole has held various offices and functions in the field of research and empirical research in social work, the promotion of young academics and the political and professional representation of social education. Since 1992, he has been part of the national preparatory and initiative group for the "Federal Social Work Congress", which takes place regularly at different universities in Germany and sees itself as an exchange forum for science and practice in social work.

From 2001 to 2007 he was chairman of the specialist committee “Training and Research” of the Working Group on Youth Welfare (AGJ), Berlin, and in this function a member of the AGJ's board.

His name is particularly closely linked to the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE), which sees itself as a specialist society for all sub-disciplines of educational science. From 2002 to 2006 Werner Thole was a member of the board of section | Social Pedagogy Commission of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE), 2002 to 2004 as spokesman for the “Social Pedagogy” section. In the years 2006-2010 he was treasurer of the DGfE board and finally from 2010 to 2013 chairman of the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE), of which he had been a board member since 2004.

Werner Thole has also been associated with the German Youth Institute in Munich since 2005. In that year he became an appointed member of the Association of the German Youth Institute (DJI) until he was re-elected in 2007. Since 2007, he has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the DJI. From 2012 initially as a deputy member of the board and finally as chairman of the scientific advisory board since 2017. In this function he is also a member of the Board of Trustees.

As a member of scientific advisory boards, Werner Thole also works with other institutions. Since 2007 he has been on the scientific advisory board of SALUS GmbH, Saxony-Anhalt, in the same year he becomes a member of the scientific advisory board of the project "Study on the Development of All-Day Schools" (StEG) of the German Institute for Educational Research (DIPF), Frankfurt a . M. From 2010 he has been a member of the scientific advisory board "Educational Research of the BMBF" and has been working on the scientific advisory board "Sexual violence against girls and boys in institutions" since 2010. From 2010 to 2011 he participated in the round table »Sexual Abuse« of AG 3 of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF ).

For the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung (hbs) he has been a liaison lecturer and reviewer since 2001, in the meantime in Düsseldorf, from 2006 to 2010, and since 2013 a member of the doctoral committee of the hbs, which, among other things, supports young scientists on their way to a doctorate financially within the framework of doctoral grants.

Thole is the author and editor of numerous publications on topics of social work, the basic work "Grundriss Soziale Arbeit". Among other things, he is (co-) editor of the series "Kassel Edition Social Work", "Social Work - Basics" and the "Social Passages".
