Halle-Köthen University of Education

The Halle-Köthen University of Education was a university with the right to award doctorates in the Halle district , since 1990 in Saxony-Anhalt , which primarily served the training of teachers for secondary schools . It emerged in 1988 from the union of the universities of education in Halle (Saale) and Köthen and was incorporated into the Martin Luther University Halle in 1993 .

Pedagogical University “NK Krupskaja” Halle

During the Weimar Republic there was already a Pedagogical Academy in Halle (Saale) from 1930 to 1933/34.

From 1950 the GDR set up institutes for teacher training , including in Halle (Saale). University of Education "Wolfgang Ratke" Köthen

In 1885 construction began on today's Ratke building on Lohmannstrasse in Köthen . In 1887 it was inaugurated as the “ Ducal Anhalt State Seminar in Cöthen”. From 1920 to 1936 it housed the German High School . In 1950 an institute for teacher training was set up there, which was elevated to the Pedagogical Institute in 1963 and the " Wolfgang Ratke " College of Education in 1974 .

In 1988 the "Wolfgang Ratke" University of Education in Köthen was merged with the "NK Krupskaja" University of Education in Halle to form the "NK Krupskaja" University of Education in Halle-Köthen. Robert Künstner, who had been head of the PH Halle since 1985, was Rector. The mathematician Werner Jungk was honored as an Honored University Professor of the GDR .

In 1991 the institution gave up the honorary name it was given in 1969 and has been called the Halle-Köthen University of Education ever since . In the same year the university hosted the international reform pedagogy conference.

The institute for school pedagogy and elementary school didactics of the University of Education "Wolfgang Ratke", then the Halle-Köthen University of Education, which existed from 1970 to 1992, has been an institute of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg since 1993 . Since the winter semester of 1997, the institute has been located in the Francke Foundations in Halle , just as the entire university was affiliated to the Martin Luther University in 1993.

The Ratke building in Köthen was transferred to the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in 1997 and was used by the preparatory college and the European Distance Learning Center in the Saxony-Anhalt University Association (EFZSA). The Department of Computer Science and Languages ​​has been using it since 2000.

Study and Scientific Life

The duration of study at educational institutes was extended from two to three years in 1955 and to four years in 1958/59. In terms of content and ideology, the course was adapted to the requirements of the newly created POS in 1959 . Since 1982, the training period has been extended by a further year, which served the large school internship ( comparable to a legal clerkship ). The course was usually completed with the academic degree of a diploma teacher and the authorization to teach two subjects. Following the structure of the section, mainly qualified teachers for mathematics and physics as well as for biology and chemistry were trained. Diploma teachers for polytechnics ( works , ESP and TZ ) and friendship pioneer leaders were called in in the other sections.

As higher academic degrees, the Dr. paed. and the Dr. rer. nat, also the PhD B for Dr. sc. was possible.

The university not only trained teachers for secondary schools, but its scientists also carried out research in the pedagogical field as well as in the sciences taught as a school or study subject. They published their results both in the academic journal published by the university itself and in international specialist journals and monographs. Scientists at the university also instructed high school students who were successful in the national Chemistry Olympiad and who were preparing for the International Chemistry Olympiad .
