Wernsdorf is a desert in the Orketal in the urban area of Winterberg . The place was also called Wernstorp . Wernsdorf is located in the Winterberger Orketalsystem nature reserve .

Geographical location

Wernsdorf was 3.3 km southeast of Winterberg at an altitude of 460 m. The farms were lined up on the flood-free edge of the meadow over a length of at least 300 m.

history

The first historical mention was made indirectly in 1281, when a councilor Heynemann von Wernsdorf was listed among the councilors of Korbach . Various references exist in written sources up to the 16th century. In the Mercator map of the Sauerland in 1572, the Werenstorff desert was entered.

Remains of the Wernsdorf church

In 1875 the foundation walls of the Wernsdorf Church were exposed during road construction work. The interior of the church had a length of 12.6 m, a width of 6 m and a wall width of 1.1 m. A home chronicle Winterberg noted at the end of the 19th century “strange rubble and ruin hill”, which was called “Old Church”. The parcel is named Auf der alten Kirche .

In 1929 the church walls had a maximum height of 1.8 m to 2 m. In 1993 the attempt to secure the remains of the clay and sandstone wall failed because the decomposition of the lime mortar had progressed too far. As the restoration of the fragile walls would have been too expensive, the experts suggested covering the ruins with earth and thus preserving them. This proposed earthfill was carried out in 2003 by the Winterberg Heritage and History Association . Then the floor plan of the church was drawn to scale with paving stones and a bronze information board was set up. The work was supported by the NRW Foundation , the Westphalian Office for the Preservation of Monuments , the Hochsauerlandkreis , the city of Winterberg and the landowner Markengenossenschaft Wernsdorf . The church ruin was designated as a ground monument .
