The Winterberger Orketalsystem nature reserve is a 103.74 hectare nature reserve (NSG) southeast of Winterberg , which goes as far as the village of Medelon . In 2008 the area was designated as an NSG by the Hochsauerlandkreis in the Winterberg landscape plan . In addition to the course of the Orke, the NSG also includes the grassland in the Orketal. The NSG consists of three areas. It goes in the east to the city limits of Medebach . In the city of Medebach, the Orketal nature reserve is directly adjacent . In the urban area of ​​Winterberg, the nature reserve Unteres Helletal , nature reserve Bergwiesen bei Winterberg and nature reserve Waldreservat Glindfeld (Winterberg) are directly adjacent. The NSG belongs to the FFH area forest reserve Glindfeld-Orketal and the bird sanctuary Medebacher Bucht .

Area description

The NSG is the Orke River . The grassland areas of the floodplain also belong to the NSG . Species such as kingfisher and gray wagtail breed in the area .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the stream and the floodplain with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
