The Upper Ruhr Valley nature reserve is a 55.29 hectare nature reserve north of Winterberg . In 2008 the area was designated as an NSG by the Hochsauerlandkreis in the Winterberg landscape plan . The NSG consists of four sub-areas. The federal highway 480 divides the partial areas from one another. A special feature is that the southern parts of the NSG belong to the FFH area DE 4816-305 Bergwiesen near Winterberg and the northern parts to the FFH area DE-4614-303 "Ruhr". Whereby the FFH area "Ruhr" includes areas on the Ruhr to Fröndenberg .

description

The NSG Oberes Ruhrtal begins shortly after the source of the Ruhr and goes to shortly before Niedersfeld . The Ruhr in the NSG is a creek no more than two meters wide with steep and flat banks. The lower course of the Berkelbach belongs to the NSG. In the valley of the Berkelbach there are species-rich lean and wet grassland communities. The Berkelbach itself meanders through the narrow floodplain and has steep breaks up to 1 meter high. In the northern NSG area the Vossmecke flows into the Ruhr.

Except for a few small red spruce areas , the rest of the NSG is grassland. The grassland is mostly grazed with cattle. In the floodplains, wet grassland is often formed, especially moist ryegrass and white clover willows and swelling forest rush meadows. In small areas in the NSG there are fragments of bristle grass at higher points.

Since 1990, the North Rhine-Westphalia Foundation has bought 5 hectares in the NSG at the request of the Association for Nature and Bird Protection in the Hochsauerlandkreis for nature conservation purposes.

Protection purpose

The NSG was designated to maintain and optimize a species-rich grassland valley system as a habitat for some rare and endangered animal and plant species. It also serves to protect the traditional use of grassland on sites at risk of abandonment through contract offers for the preservation of this biotope mosaic and the resulting diversity in the landscape. The NSG was also designated to ensure the coherence and implementation of the European Natura 2000 system of protected areas.
