The nature reserve Wildenberg is a 6.59 hectare nature reserve (NSG) northeast of Niedersfeld in the urban area of Winterberg . In 2008 the area was designated as an NSG by the Hochsauerlandkreis in the Winterberg landscape plan . The NSG includes the forest there.

Area description

The NSG is a forest area rich in old wood. Mainly beech and red spruce grow in the NSG . It is located at an altitude between 680 and 630 m. In the vicinity of the NSG on a predominantly moderately steep slope exposed to the west, red spruce forests predominate. The forest vegetation corresponds to the typical grove beech forest, the herb layer is mostly dense and relatively species-rich. The stock is predominantly in the middle and strong tree wood age. Deadwood is only found very rarely. The stock was partially thinned. In these lighter areas there is a lot of beech, e.g. In some cases, natural spruce regeneration emerged. Several up to 8 meters high diabase rock heads with a high proportion of moss stand out in the hilltop area. In the peripheral areas, smaller spruce forests and windthrow areas with natural spruce rejuvenation created after Hurricane Kyrill round off the area. With its near-natural grove beech forest with blasted rocks, the area represents a forest that is characteristic of the central Rothaargebirge.

Protection purpose

The nature reserve was designated for the maintenance and development of a beech forest and as a habitat for endangered animal and plant species. As with other nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area became a nature reserve “because of its scenic beauty and uniqueness”.
