The Neger- und Birautal nature reserve is a 113.6 hectare nature reserve (NSG) southwest of Siedlinghausen in the urban area of Winterberg . In 2008 the area was designated as an NSG by the Hochsauerlandkreis in the Winterberg landscape plan . Large areas of the nature reserve are located in the much larger FFH area of Hunau, Oberes Negertal, Renautal and Steinberg (DE-4717-301), which makes them part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas . This FFH area continues in the adjacent city of Winterberg and was designated in 2004. The NSG goes to the edge of the settlement.

Area description

The NSG includes the valleys of the rivers Neger , the lower Birau and the lower Kietelmeckesiepen with their grassland and deciduous forest. The grassland is mostly grazed with cattle . The NSG extends over 4 km in the Negertal.

Protection purpose

The NSG is to protect the streams and the floodplain with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.

Others

In the NSG there are two desert areas near the Siedlinghausen hunting lodge . These are the hamlet of Redinchusen and the parish Negerkirchen other names Negere, Neger and Negerkercken. Negere is partly southeast of the NSG. The foundation walls of the church are also across the road. The church in Negere, which belonged to the Wormbach deanery, is documented from the year 1300 . The place was abandoned in the second half of the 16th century. A church ruin Negerkirch is recorded on a map from 1577. The first archaeological excavation took place in the middle of 1852 . In 1984 new excavations took place in Negere. The abandoned hamlet of Redinchusen was first mentioned in a document in 1338. The hamlet was abandoned in the middle of the 15th century. In 2008 a farm was excavated.
