The nature reserve Züschener Forest is a 344.03  ha large nature reserve (NSG) southwest of Züschen and southeast of Mollseifen in the city of Winterberg . The area was designated as a NSG by the Hochsauerlandkreis in 2008 with the Winterberg landscape plan . The forest area belongs to the natural area Ziegenhelle . Together with the nature reserve Hallenberger Wald in the urban area of Hallenberg , which is directly adjacent to the southeast, and the nature reserve Wittgensteiner Berge bordering southwest (town Bad Berleburg , Siegen-Wittgenstein district), which are in the same natural area, it is also a FFH area Hallenberger Wald shown under DE-4817-301. The nature reserve Walsbachtal , the nature reserve Berkmecke-Talsystem and the nature reserve Ahretalsystem border directly to the NSG Züschener Wald in the north.

Area description

The NSG is a wooded ridge, whereby the NSG is divided into two parts by a grassland valley. The highest mountain in the NSG is the Zwistberg with a height of 744 m. The Ziegenhelle with a height of 815 m is just outside the NSG. In the NSG there are mainly red beech and red spruce forests . There are various beech and canyon forest communities in the NSG.

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect the forest with its species inventory. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
