Biotopes and species

The nature reserve Liemecke and hillside forests around Elkeringhausen consists of different biotopes . The head of the valley consists of rough meadows with numerous endangered plants. There are headwaters of brooks, species-rich rough meadows and nebulized grass lawns and wet meadows that are partially grazed. The vegetation on the slopes consists mainly of grove beech forests , some with large amounts of old wood. The slopes are criss-crossed by notch valleys in which streams that carry water only flow from time to time.

Oats , lynx and white clover are found on the grassland and pastures . On the small sedge vineyards are brownish sedge and Carex rostrata present. Numerous endangered plant species such as the globe flower , the fever clover and the broad-leaved orchid can also be found here.

Protection goal and hazards

The so-called protection goal of this nature reserve is the preservation of the extensively used valley head. In addition, the forest with its habitats, its natural source streams and called to culturally and historically valuable structures in the form of historic sunken roads, former kiln sites and remains of a coppice culture are preserved and protected.

The fertilization of certain sensitive areas by agriculture, the felling of old wood trees in the forests and the human settlements on its edge are perceived as endangering the area. Therefore, in the Liemecke nature reserve and its hillside forests, fertilization should be avoided, the previous extensive grassland management with mowing and grazing by cattle should be maintained, deciduous old wood trees should remain in the forests, the hardwood vegetation should be preserved and natural forest management should be carried out. The fish ponds in the lower valley floor that are described as not very valuable are to be converted into species protection waters.
