West Coast Rock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

West Coast Rock is a collective term for pop and rock music by musicians and bands from the west coast of the USA ; In the general sense, the term is used independently of any stylistic orientation .

In the first half of the 1960s "West Coast Rock" was synonymous with music that stood for the lightheartedness of beach life in Southern California , that is, for surf music , for the exuberance of easy danceable music like that of the " Beach Boys ".

In the second half of the 1960s , San Francisco temporarily developed into the center of rock music in the USA. West Coast Music now stood for "San Francisco Sound" and " Psychedelic Rock " for the music of the hippies . This meant bands and musicians like Jefferson Airplane , Grateful Dead , Quicksilver Messenger Service , The Doors and Janis Joplin , Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison .

At the end of the 1980s , grunge rock and groups like Nirvana and Pearl Jam provided another important impetus for the development of rock music from the American west coast.
