The Westergate is a left tributary of the Lower Weser, only six to seven kilometers long, on the border between Stedingen and Stadland and across from Rekum , the most northwestern part of the city of Bremen . The redesign of the Huntes estuary in connection with the construction of the Huntes Barrage 1976-1979 greatly reduced the importance of the Westergate in the river system.

In front of the Huntes barrier

Until 1976, the Westergate stretched from Woltjenloch below Juliusplate (in front of the construction of a road embankment to the Farger Ferry even further upstream) to the northern tip of Elsflether Sand . Through connecting arms like the aforementioned Woltjenloch and the Rekumer Loch, it received an inflow from the main river of the Weser. From the west the Hunte flows into the Westergate above Elsfleth. Elsfleth with its port facilities was on this branch of the Weser.

Since 1979

For the construction of the Huntes barrier, the Stedinger Weser dike was extended to Elsflether Sand, thereby interrupting the Westergate between Rekumer Loch and Hunte. Since then, the southern part of the Westergate forms a bay together with Woltjenloch and Rekumer Loch, the area of which is of course largely filled by the island of Weserdeich sand. To the west of the interruption there is only a stub of 500 meters from Westergate to the junction with the Hunte.

The former lower section of Westergate has now become the lower section of the Huntelauf, which has been extended by 8 km, both hydrologically and by name.
