Wezilo , also Wezelin , († 1088 ) was Archbishop of Mainz from 1084 to 1088 .

Life

Wezilo was initially a priest in Halberstadt . He owed his rise to Archbishop of Mainz to King Heinrich IV , whose position he subsequently represented in the conflict with Pope Gregory VII . Wezilo was one of the most important exponents of the imperial side, negotiated for Heinrich with the papal legate Otto von Ostia (later Pope Urban II ) and represented the imperial position towards the episcopal supporters of the pope at the meeting of Gerstungen and Berka in January 1085. Contrary to the legate's position, who believed that one should not have any contact with the banished king, Wezilo argued that Heinrich was not under a legitimate ban. Against the background of these fundamental contradictions, a compromise between the two sides was not possible.

At the Synod of Quedlinburg in April 1085 Wezilo himself was banned. Thereupon declared one of Heinrich IV., Wezilo and legates of the antipope Clemens III. appointed Synod in Mainz for deposed Gregory VII, who had since fled Rome, and awarded Clemens the papacy.

On the political level, Wezilo also acted as a mediator between Henry IV and the Bohemian Duke Vratislav II, who was raised to the rank of king . At the end of his life he is said to have turned away from Heinrich. He was buried in the Mainz Cathedral .
