As early as 1924 Robert Katscher wrote the song “Madonna, you are more beautiful than the sunshine” in Austria for the revue Kisses at Midnight , which premiered in 1924 at the Wiener Kammerspiele . Katscher wrote the song ( B flat major , form: ABA'C) as a slow ballad in the Viennese operetta tradition of Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kálmán ; the A sections consist of repeated notes that slowly descend, the climax ( G major ) is reached in the C section. The song was u. a. recorded by Engelbert Milde (Homochord 1780), Bernard Etté (Vox 01947) and Richard Tauber .
Two years later, the song with the English lyrics by BG DeSylva became a hit in the United States when the Paul Whiteman Orchestra recorded it with trumpeter Henry Busse as soloist on June 8, 1927 for Victor Records . The record sparked a sweet music boom in the United States . After the success of the title, Busse made it his signature tune when he formed his own band.

Even Perry Como , Jesse Crawford , Bing Crosby , Eddy Duchin , Al Jolson , Marty Wilde and Kate Smith interpreted the song. The song When Day is Done was also used in the 1940 film Hot Rhythms in Chicago and in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown in 1999 .
