history
In the 12th century, a Cistercian monastery was founded on the site of today's Whitecross . The L-shaped tower house "Almond Castle" was probably built in the early 15th century and was expanded in the following century. Almond Castle was already abandoned in the 1780s and today only a few remains of the former fortress remain.
In the 20th century, Whitecross developed in connection with coal mining and coal refining. The population has been declining since the middle of the century. While in 1961 there were 1153 people living in Whitecross, the 2011 census counted 776 people.
