Wieland Schulz-Keil (born May 22, 1945 in Muschenheim ) is a German film producer , documentary filmmaker and screenwriter .

Live and act

Wieland Schulz-Keil studied literature and philosophy at the universities of Frankfurt am Main, Heidelberg and Berlin. During these years he began to stage plays on small European stages. Since he was 21 years old, he also worked as an editor for the specialist publication Theater heute . In 1969 Schulz-Keil first made contact in the United States, where he was invited to work at New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music. A year later, Schulz-Keil founded his own documentary film production company here, Wieland Schulz-Keil Productions Inc., and began producing films.

In the years to come, Wieland Schulz-Keil produced a series of film documentaries - sometimes as an author, sometimes as a director and sometimes as a production manager or producer, several times in personal union - that often dealt with social, societal and historical issues related to the USA concerned. In 1975, as on-site production manager , he was jointly responsible for the creation of the WDR commissioned production on the subject of German cinema refugees to Hollywood, “Film emigration from Nazi Germany ”. In the following year he put together " The New Deal For Artists ", a four-hour multi-part series on the cultural policy of the Franklin D. Roosevelt government . From 1978 to 1980 Schulz-Keil's "Shamans in the Blind Land" dealt with tribal rites in Nepal. In addition, Wieland Schulz-Keil wrote numerous essays on culture and art, organized art exhibitions and founded a book publisher in New York in 1975, Urizen Books, whose publisher he remained until it was sold in 1983.

Since the early 1980s there has been a very fruitful collaboration with the legendary Hollywood director John Huston . His two most important late works, the literary adaptations Unter dem Vulkan (based on a template by Malcolm Lowry ) and Die Toten (based on a template by James Joyce ) were primarily only possible through Schulz-Keil's commitment. His later work is eclectic in nature and includes classic mainstream entertainment as well as more ambitious cinema fare. Since 1997, Wieland Schulz-Keil has dedicated himself preferably to the CyberCinema project, a network of public spaces across Europe that is primarily involved in rural regions and culturally disadvantaged urban areas. Interactive technologies are also intended to create an infrastructure for Europe-wide learning and multilingual group discussions.

Since the turn of the millennium, Wieland Schulz-Keil, together with his long-time employee Philipp Kreuzer, has also made it possible to finance a number of films, including Duel - Enemy at the Gates , The Score and Manning to give up because of circumstances or divorce is sweet . Wieland Schulz-Keil has also contributed to the development of a Europe-wide digital cinema and has participated in numerous European and international symposia, including the Montreux Symposium, where he was co-chair of the "Digital Cinema" forum.
