action

The action takes place in California in 1924. William Randolph Hearst and his actress lover Marion Davies take a tour on a yacht. The hosts are accompanied by Charlie Chaplin , Thomas Ince , the film critic Louella Parsons and the writer Elinor Glyn . After dinner, alcohol and drugs are consumed. Chaplin reveals his love for Davies and tries to persuade her to leave Hearst. Davies refuses. Parsons hopes Hearst will help her move from New York City to Hollywood .

Hearst watches what his lover is doing. He sees her talking to Ince, who he mistakenly thinks is Chaplin. He hears Davies saying in a conversation about Chaplin that she does not love him , but does not understand that it is not him himself. He shoots Ince in the head, excited. Only then does Davies explain the mistake to him. The seriously injured Ince is admitted to hospital after returning to San Diego . Hearst calls Ince's wife and says her husband attempted suicide. Hearst promises the woman that he will cover up the matter. Parsons, who watched the events, blackmailed Hearst, who promised her lifelong employment in his company.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was above average and the director's best film in several years. The costumes, the scenery and the dialogues are "flawless". There are three outstanding representations - those by Izzard, Herrmann and Lumley. The film is reminiscent of Robert Altman's Gosford Park because it also contains a murder and works efficiently with numerous characters in a small space. The plot of both films is set in the first half of the 20th century and mixes fiction with reality. The film is not aimed at commercial success with the stupid and inattentive audience.

Mark Adams wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on December 4, 2001 that the director "elegantly" combined love, sex and murder in a fictional story, marking his return to earlier forms. Bogdanovich is doing "great work". The film contains funny and complex dialogues. Dunst continues to develop as an actress; their warmth and innocence would "perfectly" match the character being played.

Awards

Kirsten Dunst won a prize at the Mar del Plata Film Festival in 2002 .
