Margaret Livingston (born November 25, 1895 in Salt Lake City , Utah , † December 13, 1984 in Warrington , Pennsylvania ) was an American film actress .

Life

Margaret Livingston was born in Salt Lake City to the Scottish immigrant John Livingston and his Stockholm- born wife Eda. She came to film as a teenager . Unlike other actresses of her time, she had no previous stage experience. In The Chain Invisible (1916) the actress, who initially appeared under the name "Marguerite Livingston", first appeared on the screen. She became a sought-after actress in the 1920s and starred in nearly 50 films by the end of the silent film era . But the petite, almost 1.60 m tall actress with the auburn hair and the dark, slit-like, narrow eyes were only rarely given leading roles. She played seductresses of European origin several times, and was used as a French woman in His private Life (1928) and Innocents of Paris (1929).

In contrast to many other silent film stars, she made the transition to talkies with ease. In The Canary Murder Case she lent Louise Brooks her voice because she refused to take part in the dubbing of the originally silent film. For the sound version, some scenes had to be re-shot in which Livingston was also used as a double for Brooks. However, she could only be seen from behind or from the side. Margaret Livingston was then seen in about 20 sound film productions before she finally withdrew into private life. In 1934 she made her last feature film , The Social Register .

Since Livingston rarely worked with well-known directors, her films are largely forgotten today. However, the ice-cold vamp she embodied in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Sunrise ( Sunrise - Song of Two People ) in 1927 is remembered .

Margaret Livingston was married to the jazz musician Paul Whiteman (1890-1967) since 1931 . The marriage remained childless. Her sister Ivy (1894-1986) also worked as an actress.
