Herbert Paschinger

Herbert Paschinger (born September 27, 1911 in Neumarkt in der Steiermark , † September 12, 1992 in Graz ) was an Austrian geographer .

Live and act

Paschinger was born on September 27, 1911 as the son of the respected geographer Viktor Paschinger in Neumarkt in Styria. In the years after the First World War, Paschinger attended elementary and middle school in Klagenfurt and then began studying geography, history and geology at the University of Graz in 1929 . In 1934 he received his doctorate and graduated in 1935 with the teaching examination in the subjects of history and geography. After completing his teaching degree, he worked for several years as an assistant teacher in the school service of the city of Klagenfurt, but was unable to find a permanent position and in 1938 began working as Hans Kinzl's assistant at the geographical institute of the University of Innsbruck . In 1941 Paschinger was drafted into the military and only worked in the weather service and from 1943 in the evaluation of aerial photographs and the creation of maps. After the war he was briefly taken as a British prisoner of war in 1945 and then resumed his work at the University of Innsbruck, where he completed his habilitation in 1948.

In 1958 he followed a call from the University of Graz as full professor and institute director, where he replaced Herbert Schlenger as institute director in the geography department. In 1981 he retired for reasons of age and died on September 12, 1992 in Graz.

Paschinger was of the opinion that comprehensive training is necessary without specialization too early and also implemented this in his own research and education. He dealt with cartography , geomorphology , economic geography and glaciology , but also geography , for his scientific work for the Carinthia area he was awarded several honors by the state of Carinthia.
