Tom Sheehey

Thomas Logan "Tom" Sheehey (born May 12, 1965 in San Antonio ) is a retired American basketball player with Irish citizenship.

Life

The 2.05 meter tall winger was a member of the University of Virginia college team from 1983 to 1987 . In 127 missions, he came to averages of 9.8 points and 4.6 rebounds. During those four years he made six three-point throws in 23 attempts. The rights to Sheehey went to the Boston Celtics in the NBA draft process in 1987 (4th selection round, 70th place). The Celtics deleted him from the squad before the start of the 1987/88 season, Sheehey then stayed with the Chicago Bulls in October 1987 , but he did not make it into the season squad there either.

He was signed by the Spanish first division club Cacaolat Granollers in December 1987, Sheehey played for the team until the end of the 1988/89 season. In the 1988/89 season in particular, he impressed as a strong offensive player with 21.2 points per encounter and had also developed into a useful long-range shooter. During the 1989/90 season the Texan was in the service of the Italian first division club Dinamo Sassari , where he posted an average of 24.7 points per encounter.

Sheehey went to Spain and back to Granollers, where he played in 1990/91, before he went to work in his home country in the Continental Basketball Association  (CBA) in 1991/92 : He played eight games each for Fort Wayne Fury and Quad City Thunder, but remained well below the statistical values ​​he had achieved in Spain and Italy. In the course of the game year 91/92 he moved to the Belgian Hasselt and strengthened the local first division.

In the 1992/93 game year Sheehey was under contract with the Spanish second division club CB Canarias . In 1993/94 he played briefly with Valvi Girona in the first division of Spain and then in Argentina with Quilmes Mar del Plata. The game year 1994/95 was also divided between Spain and South America: Sheehey was briefly under contract with Baloncesto León in Spain and then with Universidad de Temuco in Chile .

29 appearances in the US league CBA for the Connecticut Pride team were for the Texan in the 1995/96 season. In the 1996/97 season he was a member of the Irish team St. Vincent in Dublin , then went back to Spain in November 1996 and played for the first division club CB Murcia Artel.

At the beginning of the 1997/98 season he was briefly in the service of Serapide Pozzuoli (second division of Italy), in December 1997 he switched to the German basketball league for SG Braunschweig . Sheehey was valued by the Lower Saxony team for his hard-nosed and straightforward style of play, with which he considerably strengthened Braunschweig. He was nicknamed "Major Tom" and became the favorite of the Bundesliga club's supporters. In the 1997/98 season Sheehey played in Braunschweig on the side of Michael Jackel , Scooter Barry , Douglas Spradley and Sean Schiano . As the table sixth in the main round they moved into the Bundesliga quarter-finals, but lost to Bamberg there . Sheehey made 16 Bundesliga appearances for Braunschweig during the season with 14.2 points per encounter.

Sheehey then left Braunschweig and signed with the Belgian first division club Gent , but in November 1998 the Texan returned to the Lower Saxony club, which was plagued by injury concerns. He was eliminated with Braunschweig in the preliminary round for the Bundesliga quarter-finals against Bamberg, Sheehey played 16 games for SG in 1998/99 and averaged 13.9 points per game.

The last stop in his professional career was the Italian second division team Fabriano Basket, for whom he briefly played in the 1999/2000 season. Sheehey's nephew, Will  , also became a professional basketball player.
