Sieghard Morawetz
Sieghard Otto Morawetz (born November 25 or 27, 1903 in Knittelfeld ; † 1993 ) was professor of geography and long-time lecturer at the Institute for Geography (and Spatial Research) at the University of Graz .
Life
Sieghard Morawetz was the son of a qualified engineer working in railway administration. He grew up in Upper Carinthia, where his father had been transferred. Morawetz studied geography / geology with Robert Sieger and history at the University of Graz from 1922 to 1926 . He stayed as an assistant at the institute and completed his habilitation in 1932 with Otto Maul . Maul returned to Germany, Morawetz became an adjunct professor in 1939 and defacto headed the institute until 1945. He carried out research under Hans Spreitzer and Herbert Schlenger and became a tit. Appointed full professor and in 1967 full professor of the second chair at the institute. He retired in 1974 for reasons of age, but taught until 1975 when his successor Wilhelm Leitner was appointed .
Act
Morawetz was interested in geomorphology , in particular glacial - Karst morphology , and climatology , as well as human geographical and regional geographical issues. In addition to Styria and Carinthia as specialist areas in his youth, he worked across southern and southeastern Europe , especially Yugoslavia and Italy and the former Soviet Union . He is considered a formative teacher of the Graz Geographic School.
His work on the natural spatial structure of Styria (1971/73) flowed into the current landscape structure of Styria according to Gerhard Lieb .
