His research on transcultural psychiatry emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive psychotherapy that takes cultural differences into account and reflects them psychoanalytically. He assumes that the experience of foreignness is an anthropological constant and a ubiquitous human phenomenon. He compares the process of migration and integration with the developmental tasks of puberty and the earlier phases of individuation, as described by Margaret Mahler , and speaks in the context of real migration experiences of a cultural adolescence , which should be mastered as a new developmental task. The poles of identity and belonging would have to find a new balance. How the earlier phases could be managed plays an important role individually. In his opinion, the need to do this task again can therefore also be an opportunity for the individual. At the same time, it is taken into account that trauma in the event of flight or displacement complicates the psychological processing possibilities. In addition, with his reflections and experiences as a psychiatrist, he demonstrates the need for psychotherapeutic help for people with migration and refugee experiences. For the psychotherapists, he calls for an examination of their own experiences of foreignness and their processing so that the countertransference that arises in such therapies can be appropriately included and not become an obstacle to the therapeutic process.
