The hut on the edge of the Austrian snow bar

The Wiener-Neustädter-Hütte is a refuge of the Austrian Tourist Club on the edge of the Austrian Schneekar in the west face of the Zugspitze at an altitude of 2213 meters (2212 m according to other information).

history

After the via ferrata was secured by the Austrian Schneekar to the Zugspitze in 1879, the board of the Wiener Neustadt section of the ÖTK decided in 1883 to build a refuge on this path. Initially, a wooden block construction was planned, but finally a stone building was built. The Wiener Neustädter Hütte was opened on September 1, 1884, and from 1886 it was managed in the summer season. A first expansion was necessary due to the rapidly increasing number of visitors in 1890/91, others followed in 1903 and 1911–13.

During the Second World War and the post-war period, the section was no longer able to maintain the hut due to falling income and high maintenance costs and was looking for a buyer. In 1951, the headquarters of the ÖTK in Vienna initially took over the care and administration of the hut, and in 2001 it became their property. In the following period, fundamental renovations and modernizations were carried out both on the building fabric and on the technical equipment.

care

The water supply comes from a contained source with a connected storage tank and UV disinfection system. Electricity is generated by a photovoltaic system, and a solar hot water system ensures that part of the hut rooms are heated. The accommodation is supplied with goods by gondolas of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn , the route of which runs exactly above the hut. To do this, the train is stopped when the supplying gondola has reached the hut. Then, with the cable car door open, the supplies are lowered around 40 meters using an installed cable winch. If necessary, this is also carried out during normal personnel operations.
