Vienna city hall tournament
The Wiener Stadthallenturnier was a traditional indoor soccer tournament in the Austrian capital Vienna .
It got its name from its venue, the Wiener Stadthalle . Josef 'Pepi' Argauer is considered to be the "inventor" of the tournament, which took place for the first time in 1959 . The premier winner was Vienna Austria , which also holds the record as "Hall King" with 19 tournament victories.
The game was played on 735 parquet tiles , which resulted in a playing field of 49 × 30 meters, the goals were 5 × 2 meters. The tournament was held for the last time in 2009. Due to declining spectator interest and the resulting financial losses for the organizers as well as the footballers' wish for a longer break in winter, the tournament has not been able to revive since then.
Historical
The tournament, which was held during the winter break of the Austrian soccer championship, enjoyed great popularity from its foundation until the 1970s and 1980s. Only in 1969 was the tournament held in the Donauparkhalle . The "gang magic" was a must for the Viennese football fan. In addition to the traditional Viennese clubs, renowned clubs from abroad also competed. The two big Munich clubs FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich also had their guest appearances on the Viennese floor. Bayern Munich even won the tournament in 1971 with its stars like Beckenbauer , Maier and Müller .
When the Vienna Stadthallenturnier, which had been an independent tournament until then, was converted into a preliminary round of the Austrian Indoor Cup in 1998/99, the tournament began to slide downhill. Because the traditional Viennese clubs like Rapid , Austria , Vienna , Wiener Sport-Club , FavAC , FC Admira / Wacker no longer formed the participant base, but this was made up of teams from all over Austria. With this and other changes in the following years, audience interest steadily decreased. The tournament was last held in this form in 2005. For 2007, it was finally possible to bring the tournament back to its original mode, as an independent indoor soccer tournament. In addition to Rapid , Austria , Vienna and the Vienna Sport Club Wienstrom , the Linz ASK was invited as a guest team . After a break in 2008, the Viennese arch-rivals Austria and Rapid acted as organizers in 2009, but the oldest Austrian club, Vienna, went off the floor for the first time as the winner.
