Hans Wiers-Jenssen (born November 25, 1866 in Bergen , Norway ; † August 25, 1925 there ) was a Norwegian playwright , writer and theater historian .

Life

Hans Wiers-Jenssen graduated from high school in 1885 at the Bergen Katedralskole before finally studying languages ​​and cultural history. He then found work as a journalist for Dagbladet . During this time he wrote his first play with Tutti-Frutti . The revue was premiered in 1893 at the Eldorado theater in Oslo and was a surprise success with 101 performances. From 1895 he worked as a theater director at the Christiania Theater , in 1899 at the Nationaltheatret and from 1900 to 1905 at the Den Nationale Scene .

After he made his debut as a writer in 1907 with his novel Presten paa Korshavn og hans hustru , he had his greatest success ever with Anne Pedersdotter a year later . The play is based on the true story of the alleged witch Anne Pedersdotter , who was burned in Bergen in 1590. The play has been translated into several languages ​​and performed in America and Asia. In 1943 it was filmed under the German title Tag der Rache .

Hans Wiers-Jenssen was married to the writer Rigmor Nicolowna Danielsen. Their son Johan Henrik Wiers-Jenssen later became head of the theater and author.
