Wigand von Waldsassen
According to modern tradition, Wigand von Waldsassen († in the 12th century) was one of the first monks of the Waldsassen monastery, which was founded in 1133 . He has been venerated as a blessed since the 17th century, and his feast day is October 26th.
According to this tradition, Wigand was a Cistercian monk in the Volkenroda monastery in Thuringia. From there he had his confreres in 1133 in the of Diepold III. von Vohburg , Margrave in Nordgau , led the newly founded Waldsassen Monastery , apparently as prior .
Wigand has been venerated as a blessed since the Baroque period - as have four of his monastery brothers from the 12th to 14th centuries: Gerwig von Volmarstein, the abbots Hermann (1212-1220) and Johannes III. von Elbogen (1310-1323), as well as Friedrich III. von Leuchtenberg , the later bishop of Eichstätt (1328–1329) , who was later rejected by the population . This veneration goes back to unfounded entries in the Menologium Cisterciense by Chrysostomus Henriquez (Antwerp 1630), not to actual practice - especially since Wigand and Gerwig's existence cannot even be proven. This practice of veneration changed after the book was published in a way that was advantageous for the monastery and its re-establishment after the Counter-Reformation .
