Viktor Sergejewitsch Wawilow ( Russian Виктор Сергеевич Вавилов , English transcription: Viktor Sergeyevich Vavilov; born July 8, 1921 in Moscow ; † January 25, 1999 ibid) was a Russian physicist who worked in the field of semiconductor physics .

Life

WS Wawilow was born in Moscow in 1921 as the son of the well-known physicist Sergei Ivanovich Wawilow . In 1939 he began his studies at the Faculty of Physics at Leningrad University . Six months after starting his studies, he was drafted into the army. He took part in the Soviet-Finnish War and served in the Red Army until the end of World War II . After the end of the war he continued his studies in Leningrad and completed it with a thesis on the photoelectric properties of lead sulfide with AA Lebedew at the State Optical Institute . He then worked in the field of nuclear physics, but became increasingly interested in the interaction of radiation with semiconductors and in 1951 went to the Lebedev Institute (FIAN) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow, where he worked in the field until his death in 1999 who was active in semiconductor physics. In 1960 he received the Russian doctorate . From 1956 he also taught at Lomonossow University , since 1963 as a professor.

His main area of work was the investigation of the interaction processes of electromagnetic radiation and high-energy particle beams with semiconductors. He made important contributions to understanding various mechanisms of such processes. Monographs published by him were also published in English.

In 1987 he was awarded the Lebedev Gold Medal of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Since 1992 he has been an honorary member of the Academy of Athens .
