Willibrordus Martinus Pancratius "Wil" van der Aalst (born January 29, 1966 in Eersel ) is a Dutch computer scientist who deals with process management. Since January 1, 2018, he has held an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at RWTH Aachen University and head of the Process Mining department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT. Before that he was a professor at the Technical University of Eindhoven .

Wil van der Aalst studied at the TU Eindhoven with a diploma in computer science in 1988 and a doctorate in mathematics in 1992 (Time colored Petri nets and their application to logistics) with Jaap Wessels and Kees van Hee . Afterwards he was a lecturer and headed the Specification and Modeling of Information systems (SMIS) group and in 2006 he received a full professorship and headed the Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) group. van der Aalst is one of the co-founders of the Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC / e) and was its scientific director from 2013 to 2018. He also teaches part-time at the Queensland University of Technology .

Van der Aalst was visiting professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (AIFB), the University of Georgia , and the University of Colorado Boulder .

He deals with workflow management , business process management , process mining , Petri networks , specification languages and simulation. He is known for YAWL (Yet Another Workflow Language), an open source project for the development of a workflow language with workflow design patterns, and ProM (for process mining).

He is a member of the Royal Dutch Society of Sciences and Academia Europaea , and since 2020 also of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . He is one of the ISI Highly Cited Researchers.
