Wild Is the Wind is a song written by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington in 1957 . In the version sung by Johnny Mathis , it was used as a movie song for the film Wild is the Wind and received an Oscar nomination for "Best Song" . The single reached number 22 on the Billboard Top 100 chart.

The song, a slow love song, has been covered many times , including Nina Simone (1964, on the album of the same name ), David Bowie (1976, Station to Station ), Billy MacKenzie (released posthumously in 2004, Transmission Impossible ), George Michael (1999 , Songs from the Last Century ), Randy Crawford (2000, Play Mode ), Cat Power (2000, The Covers Record ), Barbra Streisand (2003, The Movie Album ) and Esperanza Spalding (2010, Chamber Music Society ). David Bowie's version was also released as a single .
