Wilfried Detering (born July 7, 1939 in Hillegossen ; † February 1, 2017 in Bielefeld ) was a German pedigree poultry breeder , association official and specialist author.

Life

Detering was a trained electrical engineer. Influenced by his grandfather and father, he devoted himself to breeding poultry as a child. He became a member of the pedigree poultry breeding association in his hometown at the age of eight. Together with his father, with whom he formed the Detering and Son breeding community , he successfully took part in national and international breed shows. The focus of the breeding community was on dwarf Plymouth Rocks , silver pigeons and German show pigeons as well as, from the 1960s, on modern English dwarf fighters , which he bred in blue-birch, blue-orange-breasted, blue and black. Detering has won multiple German championships and national champions with his races.

From 1956 Detering was active in numerous pedigree poultry breeding associations in higher positions, including as Vice President of the Pool Poltry Club Cornwall / England and 40 years as chairman of the Bielefeld City Association. In the Federation of German poultry breeders , he spent several decades in animal welfare advisory board and operates the public committee and was appointed on the occasion of his 60th birthday honorary master of BDRG. He was also an honorary member of the 1st Robert Oettel Chicken Society in Görlitz, the Modern Game Bantam Club England, the Swiss Fighter Poultry Breeders Club and others.

From 1971 to 2013 Detering acted as a judge of groups B, C, D and F for heavy and light chicken breeds , bantams as well as mold and chicken pigeons , not only in Germany at large shows, but also internationally in Europe, the USA , Asia and South Africa. In 2008 he was awarded the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association's Certificate of Honor for judging the Royal Cornwall Show.

From the 1970s on, Detering brought out various non-fiction books that dealt with breed poultry. For schools, he designed educational posters such as the pedigree of pedigree chickens, bantams, geese and dwarf fighters or From Egg to Chick , which appeared in 2003 with an edition of 123,000 copies. Detering actively campaigned for the welfare of animals, against cruelty to animals and factory farming and supported, among other things, development projects with pedigree poultry in Tanzania and Brazil as well as the rebuilding of poultry farming in Bosnia after the end of the Bosnian wars . In 1986 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his social commitment. The press called him "East Westphalia poultry pope". In 2008, ZDF Detering devoted a report entitled Der Hühner-Baron .

In 2013 Detering suffered a stroke, was subsequently dependent on a wheelchair and resigned from many of his posts in pedigree poultry breeding associations. In 2015, after 40 years, he gave up the chairmanship of the city association of pedigree poultry breeders in Bielefeld and was appointed honorary chairman of the association. Detering died in 2017 and was buried in the Stieghorst cemetery.
