Wilfried Fiedler (legal scholar)

Wilfried Fiedler (born December 22, 1940 in Hohenstadt, Moravia ) is a German legal scholar .

Life

Fiedler attended the drawing school in Frankfurt am Main from 1951 to high school graduation in 1960 . He then studied law and was awarded a doctorate in January 1970 at the University of Freiburg with a thesis on state continuity. iur. PhD . In 1976 he completed his habilitation thesis on the function and importance of public law commitments in administrative law.

He then worked as a professor at Kiel University from 1977 to 1984 , where he was director of the Institute for International Law (since 1995: Walther Schücking Institute for International Law ). In 1984 he accepted a professorship for constitutional, administrative and international law at Saarland University , where he worked until his retirement in 2002. In addition, Fiedler was a lecturer at the University of Zurich in 1996 and 1999 .

Fiedler published many papers on the legal situation of the German Reich after 1945 and generally on state continuity and state succession . Since the mid-1980s, he has been increasingly concerned with the law of international cultural property protection; In 1986 he founded the research center “Protection and Return of Cultural Goods in Applicable International Law”, and from 1993 onwards he headed the German law section of the Joint German-Russian Commission for the Mutual Return of Cultural Goods .

Honors

In November 1979 Fiedler was appointed to the humanities class of the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts .

In January 2007 Fiedler was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit with ribbon .
