The Wilhelm-Leuschner-Schule (WLS) is a secondary and secondary school in Darmstadt-Bessungen .
Architecture and history
The Wilhelm Leuschner School was named after the former Hessian interior minister and resistance fighter Wilhelm Leuschner . The school was built in 1955/56 according to plans by Peter Grund and was one of the first new school buildings in Darmstadt after the Second World War . The architect Peter Grund created - in contrast to the previously usual compact school construction - several separate buildings for the individual grades, for the sports hall and the administration and connected them with each other through covered corridors.
The schoolyards, which were separated according to age groups, lay between the individual school buildings. The Wilhelm-Leuschner-Schule shows a strong contrast of long, open hallways on slender pillars and low-rise buildings with elongated building lines that are emphasized vertically. The cubic structures and their perforated facades with rich changes in shape form an artistic overall work. Ernst Vogel designed the facade painting on the front of a class wing . In the foyer there are sgraffito murals in colored plaster by Eberhard Schlotter .
The Wilhelm Leuschner School was a primary school with preliminary classes and a school kindergarten . In 1960/61, the ninth school year was introduced for testing purposes at the Wilhelm Leuschner School, and between 1979 and 1981 there was also a tenth year of secondary school, which was closed again due to a lack of pupils. In 1975 the school lost the preliminary classes , a few years later also the elementary school . The Wilhelm Leuschner School, now a listed building, was completely renovated in 1981 and today serves as a secondary school with an evening secondary school for adults. In 2015 the school was renovated again.
Evening middle school
The Abendrealschule is a school for adults and is organizationally linked to the Wilhelm Leuschner School. The secondary school leaving certificate can be acquired here on five evenings within two years, or shortened if particularly suitable .
