Ernst Vogel (born September 22, 1894 in Halberstadt , † August 5, 1970 in Darmstadt ) was a German painter of the 20th century.

life and work

In 1900 Ernst Vogel moved with his family to Darmstadt . After completing school, he served in the First World War from 1914 to 1916 . As early as 1919 he took part in the first exhibition of the " Darmstädter Sezession " founded by Kasimir Edschmid and Carl Gunschmann , of which he did not become a member until 1927. Between 1925 and 1932 Vogel studied painting with Adolf Schinnerer and Julius Heß at the Munich Academy . He learned the technique of wall painting , the " fresco buono ", from the painter and art theorist Max Doerner .

The political changes from 1933 onwards interrupted the painter's development and he did not exhibit any more until the end of the war. During the Third Reich, he and his family moved to Dinkelsbühl , his wife's hometown. In 1940 he was drafted into military service.

In 1945 he was one of the founders of the " New Darmstadt Secession ". In the 1950s, he made a significant contribution to shaping the cityscape of Darmstadt with numerous art in building commissions. He decorated his own house at Flotowstraße 1 with mosaics , wall ceramics and sgraffiti . In Darmstadt, wall designs using different techniques in his unmistakable artistic signature have been preserved on numerous public buildings and many private houses.

After 1960 he made several study trips to France and Spain .
