history

In November 1894 there was the first idea to build this observation tower. At the end of 1895 the decision was made to build and on March 22, 1896 the foundation stone was laid . The inauguration of the Kaiserwarte took place on September 9, 1896.

In 1921 extensive repair work was carried out on the tower, which was co-financed by the daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II, Duchess Victoria Luise . In addition, a wooden barrack was built for catering. Nevertheless, between 1922 and 1950 there was only minimal cultivation with temporary interruptions.

After the Second World War (1939–1945), further repair of the tower was made possible through the initiative of the Blankenburg Harz Club members. In 1950 the name was changed to "Wilhelm-Raabe-Warte" in honor of the writer Wilhelm Raabe .

Because the wooden barracks had been destroyed, the Karl Hildebrandt company (Blankenburg) built a massive barrack for management purposes. This was opened on July 10, 1954. In 1976, in the course of the construction of the ZBO's company holiday home “Einheit” Dachrieden with a public restaurant “Wilhelm-Raabe-Warte”, the observation tower was further refurbished. The restaurant was operated from 1978 to 1992.

On February 19, 1996 the Harzklub-Zweigverein Blankenburg eV bought the property with the "Wilhelm-Raabe-Warte". On September 15, 1996, the observation tower was handed over to the public.
