Geographical location

The Oesig lies in the northern Harz , to the west in the city of Blankenburg (Harz). The Oesig is bounded to the south and west by the first mountain peaks of the Harz Mountains. While the inhabited buildings of the place are only between 220 and 280 m above sea level. NN, the highest point of the surrounding hills (Staufenberg) is 434 m above sea level. NN.

The area of the Oesig extends to about 1.5 km². The population is around 1800 (including retirement homes).

history

The first known records date from 1935. From 1936 to 1938, almost the entire settlement was built as it is today. Almost all the houses had the same structure and were used to accommodate workers from the Harzer Werke industrial company , which was founded in 1872 and located between Blankenburg and the Oesig district . Miners were also needed for the nearby mines. In the course of the immense demand for military equipment and other metallic industrial goods, the need for workers in the region increased.

The Blankenburg-Oesig subcamp was built on the Lindenberg for the persecuted Jewish population. The subcamps Blankenburg-Regenstein and Langenstein Zwieberge also exist in the vicinity . The former camp in the district of Oesig was used as a Diesterweg secondary school during the GDR era (until 1976). It fell victim to vandalism in the 1990s. Today there is a memorial stone with a wreath as a reminder and reminder of the crimes against humanity in World War II .

Until 1945, Oesig was part of the Michaelstein community in the Blankenburg district of Brunswick and in 1952 it came to the Wernigerode district of the GDR district of Magdeburg .

There was also a need for workers during the GDR era. The Harz factories produced radiators, cylinder liners for marine diesel engines and trucks as well as other cast elements for industry and private individuals on a large scale. As a result, more people settled in the Oesig district. In 1976 the Adolf-Diesterweg POS was built. In 1987 a prefabricated housing estate (type WBS 70 ) was built to meet the demand for living space in Blankenburg. A short time later the old kindergarten was closed and a new one was built (also a prefabricated building).

The turn of the year 1989 and the tight budget situation led to a massive drop in students from 1995 onwards. As a result, the Diesterweg School was closed. After a fire in the building, the new owner renovated the former school building in order to transform it into the headquarters of the Heimatverein. The renovation work was completed in 2005. In the building there is now the public restaurant "Zur alten Schule" with a bowling alley and party rooms. Due to the departure of more families and young people, the number of kindergarten children also fell to such an extent that the mayor and city council of Blankenburg (Harz) were forced to act in 2005. The kindergarten, which had only been built 18 years earlier, was closed for the time being. The building was renovated and now houses a multi-generation house (seniors and children under one roof).

Culture and sights

In the immediate vicinity is the Wilhelm-Raabe-Warte, formerly the Kaiserwarte , which served as a viewing tower with a restaurant, but which is now private property and can therefore only be viewed from the outside. The numerous hiking trails, some of which are official mountain bike tours and Nordic walking routes, are useful for relaxation. In the northwest of the area there are also some ponds with numerous mallards. In summer the Mönchemühlenteich could be used by boats, but is currently out of order. At the end of the pond there is a waterfall that flows as a Goldbach towards Blankenburg (Harz). The Teufelsbad specialist clinic with mud baths, etc. is also nearby.
