The Mönchsbach , also Silberbornbach , in the Harz is a southern and orographically right tributary of the Goldbach in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt .

Naming

The syllable silver from Silberbornbach and Silberbach stands for the nature of the water. This does not necessarily have to indicate silver , which was not extracted here, in the water. Rather, it can be assumed that the clear, silvery shimmering water gave the stream its name. Born is an appellative only documented from 1469 . It means spring or spring water. Thus the Silberbornbach is a brook whose source supplies very clear, silvery shimmering water. Grund comes from the Old High German or Middle High German word grunt , which in its original meaning was the ground or simply the bottom of something. From Middle High German, it became a special name for a deeply cut valley or such a gorge. The valley was obviously named after the source. The actual name of the stream is formed from the name of the source, with the -bach subsequently appended . The current name Mönchsbach is likely to have a causal connection with the monastery on the lower course of the stream.

course

The Mönchsbach rises in a valley of the Harz called Silberbornsgrund . It flows from the Silberborn spring  - west of Blankenburg . Water flows in from some mountain springs. The stream follows the valley and flows through a 9  acre park, part of the to Oesig associated forest peace , and is dammed in two trout ponds. After leaving the park, the stream flows northwards to flow  into the Bode inflow Goldbach on the right at the Am Lindenberg road, the 1347 district road coming from the Teufelsbach .

Forest peace

The Waldfriedens estate, once a paint mill, is located on Mönchsbach. In 1898 it was converted into a hotel. Electricity was generated with the help of a water wheel to generate energy through hydropower. The use as a hotel and restaurant ended on June 30, 1997; since 2000 the property has been used as a residential building.
