Wilhelm August Hermann Klages , called August Klages, (born June 19, 1871 in Hanover , † December 27, 1957 in Göttingen ) was a German chemist and university professor.

Life

As the son of a master baker, after attending the Leibniz Gymnasium in Hanover, he initially completed a commercial training and from 1893 studied chemistry, botany and mineralogy at the University of Heidelberg . He was a student and from 1895 assistant to the chemist Victor Meyer . In 1896 he received his doctorate on hydrogenated benzenes and was then a lecturer at Meyer's successor, Theodor Curtius , until he completed his habilitation in organic chemistry in 1900. He then worked as a private lecturer and from 1904 as an associate professor.

In 1906 he took a leave of absence to work in the chemical industry, initially at BASF . In the following year he took over the management of the Saccharinfabrik AG in Salbke near Magdeburg as the successor to the sick Constantin Fahlberg . Under his leadership, the company's product range was significantly expanded. He replaced the sales, which were severely restricted by the saccharine law, with the production of sulfuric acid . There was also a focus on pesticides. In 1912 he discovered the bitter substance in the oxidation of o- toluene sulfamide with potassium permanganate . In 1920 he developed Germisan , a seed dressing agent , which gained considerable importance in agricultural practice. Klages, who was considered a leading expert in the fields of sweetener, sulfur, hydrochloric acid and pesticide production, acquired various patents.

During his time in Salbke he lived in Alt Salbke 49, which Constantin Fahlberg had previously lived in . The renovated historic building was demolished in 2008 to provide better visibility for a shopping market.

From 1927 Klages served as a managing board member of the Association of German Chemists in Berlin . In 1928 he became an honorary professor for materials management at the Technical University in Berlin-Charlottenburg . He was a committee member of the association for the protection of the interests of the chemical industry in Germany, board member in the German standards committee, in the association of technical-scientific associations, in the Reich committee for metal protection and in the German chemical society.

In 1933 he retired from professional life and continued to live in Berlin. After the end of the Second World War he moved to Göttingen.
