Wilhelm Ernst (born August 25, 1905 in Gelsenkirchen ; † July 23, 1952 in Gelsenkirchen) was a strong German chess player in the 1930s and 1940s .

First of all, Ernst achieved local successes in West Germany: In 1934 he became the Westphalian Champion for the first time , in 1935 he took third place in Cologne behind Ludwig Rellstab and Ludwig Engels , whereby he qualified for the tournament for the championship of Germany in Aachen in the same year, where he together with Carl Ahues and Paul Michel took second place behind Kurt Richter . In 1936 he was nominated for the unofficial Chess Olympiad in Munich. Here he convinced with a result of 9.5 out of 14 (+8 = 3 −3). Then he won the tournament in Weidenau in 1937. In 1938 he was fifth in the Heilbronn zone tournament .

His highest historical rating was 2612, which he reached in September 1935.

Ernst was a city ​​inspector in Gelsenkirchen by profession .
