Wilhelm Freh

Wilhelm Freh (born August 18, 1910 in Vienna , † November 5, 1986 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian mineralogist , petrographer and museum director.

Life

Wilhelm Freh studied general science and chemistry at the University of Vienna and obtained his doctorate in 1936. phil. From 1936 to 1938 he was the private assistant of the university professor Emil Dittler . After the “Anschluss” he was in the Wehrmacht from 1938 to 1940, was seriously wounded and then went to the Technical University of Munich and Hanover for further training . After the war ended in 1945 he returned to his family in Aschach an der Donau . In 1946 he became head of the mineralogical and geological department at Upper Austria. State Museum.

1960 to 1975 he was director of the Upper Austrian State Museum . He wrote several scientific articles and exhibition catalogs.

In 1963 Freh was awarded the Golden Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria. A species of anthracotherium from the Upper Oligocene Sands of Linz (Anthracotherium frehi n. Sp.) Is named after him. From 1967 he was a board member of Upper Austria. Museum association.
