Wilhelm Hölscher (Egyptologist)

Wilhelm Hölscher (born June 19, 1912 in Halle (Saale) , † 1943 ) was a German Egyptologist .

Life

Wilhelm Hölscher was the son of the Old Testament scholar Gustav Hölscher (1877–1955) and the older brother of the classical philologist Uvo Hölscher (1914–1997). He attended high schools in Gießen , Marburg and Bonn , where he passed his Abitur in 1930. At Bonn University he first studied Classical Archeology , Egyptology and Ancient History . In the summer semester 1931 he moved to the University of Berlin , in the winter semester 1931/32 and in the summer semester 1932 he studied in Tübingen , from the winter semester 1932/33 in Munich , where he finally turned to Egyptology as a major. In 1936 he received his doctorate under Alexander Scharff . He then worked as a research assistant with Hermann Kees at the Egyptological seminar of the University of Göttingen , where from May 1937 he was also managing director of the university's international office. For the academic year 1938/39 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute , most of which he spent in Egypt. There he took part in the excavations in Merimde and Hermopolis Magna . On August 1, 1941, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . He has been missing since his deployment in the Donets-Mius offensive on July 17, 1943.
