Thapelo Phora gained his first experience at international championships in 2016 at the World Indoor Championships in Portland , where he was eliminated from the South African 4 x 400 meter relay with 3: 08.45 min in the first round. At the African Championships in Durban , he reached over 400 meters to the semi-finals, in which he was eliminated with 47.73 s. Two years later he won the silver medal behind the Botswanian Baboloki Thebe at the African Championships in Asaba in 45.14 s . Even with the relay he was able to secure the silver medal behind Kenya in 3: 03.50 minutes. In 2019 he took part in the Africa Games in Rabat for the first time , where he won the silver medal behind Botswana Leungo Scotch in 45.59 seconds and also won the silver medal behind Botswana in 3: 03.18 minutes. He qualified for the World Championships in Doha , where he was eliminated with 45.24 s in the semifinals . He also took part in the relay, but 3: 02.06 min was not enough for a final .
In 2016 Phora became the South African champion in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
