Wilhelm Hisinger (born December 22, 1766 in Västmanland , † June 28, 1852 in Skinnskatteberg ) was a Swedish chemist, geologist and mineralogist . Together with Samuel Gustaf Hermelin, he is a pioneer in geological mapping of Sweden.

life and work

Hisinger came from a wealthy family who owned mines in Sweden. His father was Vilhelm Hising (1731-1780) and his mother Barbara Katarina Fabrin. After the death of his parents in 1780, his uncle Johan Hisinger (1727–1790) took him on. He received his scientific training mainly in the private laboratory in his family environment. Hisinger also studied at Uppsala University , Uppsala universitet and enrolled in the Bergskollegium in 1786 , but soon left it again, moved to his headquarters in Skinnskatteberg and lived in Bagga Västmanland , where there was an extensive iron industry.

He continued to work there and worked with Jöns Jakob Berzelius . Together with Berzelius he discovered the oxides of cerium (1803) and lithium .

Honors

An iron (III) phyllosilicate , the mineral hisingerite with the formula Fe 3+ 2 Si 2 O 5 (OH) 4 · 2H 2 O, was named in his honor.
