Wilhelm Huberts (also Willi or Willy ; born February 22, 1938 in Voitsberg , Styria ) is a former professional footballer and Austrian national player . He was the first Austrian player in the German Bundesliga .
Huberts began his career in his homeland in western Styria at ASK Voitsberg . From there, the GAK brought him to the stadium on Körösistraße in 1955. Due to his outstanding technical skills and scoring qualities, he was soon admired and adored by the Graz audience.
When the GAK played a number of friendly games in New York in 1959 (including two against Real Madrid ), the midfielder was so convincing that he was signed by the New York Hungarians the following year . With this club he was able to win the US Open Cup (now the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup ) in 1962 .
In the years 1959 to 1960 he already played four internationals, where he was able to score the second goal for a 2-0 away win in his debut against the Belgian national team. With the move to New York, however, the aspiring professional put an abrupt end to his career as a national player of the ÖFB , as the transport options at that time no longer allowed convocation. Even after his later move to Eintracht Frankfurt , he could no longer continue his career as a national player, since at that time the legionaries were only released from the clubs for major tournaments.
In 1962 he returned to Europe and played for AS Roma from 1962 to 1963 . In 1963 he moved to Eintracht Frankfurt , a founding member of the newly created Bundesliga. With Huberts, Eintracht was one of only four legionnaires in German professional football and the only Austrian in the first season. In the 1960s, Huberts was a central figure in the Frankfurt team. He mostly wore the number 10 and played a total of 247 competitive games, scoring 80 goals. Due to his technical skills, Huberts could be used in almost all field player positions. In Frankfurt he initially played primarily offensively, later, under coach Erich Ribbeck , he was discovered and used as a libero .
In the 1970/71 season he moved back to Austria, initially for a year at FK Austria Wien , and finally ended his playing career from 1971 to 1975 at his home club GAK. He then worked as a trainer at Kapfenberg, DSV Alpine Donawitz and the Linz Athletics Sport Club (LASK).
