Wilhelm I of Eu (12th century)

Wilhelm I of Eu († January 27, 1057) was a son of Duke Richard I of Normandy and Gunnora . He was the Count of Hiémois and was made Count of Eu after 998 .

However, different information is given in the sources about Wilhelm's mother.

  • Dudo de Saint-Quentin sees him as the son of Richard and another mistress as Gunnora.
  • Wilhelm von Jumièges names Gottfried (Geoffroy de Brionne) and Wilhelm as Richard's two sons from his concubines.
  • Robert von Torigni also names Gottfried and Wilhelm as Richard's sons of concubines, and adds that Wilhelm was only Count of Eu and became Count of Brionne after the death of his brother.
  • A document from 1012 is signed by "Richard ... son of the great Prince Richard ... Robert Archbishop ... of the Church of Rouen and Wilhelm and Mauger, brothers of Count Richard

Wilhelm von Jumièges reports of an uprising of a brother of the Duke against his father, Duke Richard, after he received the County of Hiémois, of his five years imprisonment in Rouen under the guard of Turquetil , Seigneur de Tourville, his escape and his installation as Count of Eu (after a reconciliation) by his ducal brother Richard II.

After his escape, Wilhelm married Lesceline, the daughter of his guard Turquetil. After Wilhelm's death, she and her sons founded the male monastery of Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives and a female monastery in Lisieux ; she died on January 26, 1057/58 in the monastery.

The sons of Wilhelm and Lecelina are named:

In addition, one can attribute a daughter of unknown name to Wilhelm and Lescelina, who was the mother of Guillaume "de Alderi", who was hanged in 1096 for conspiracy against the English King Wilhelm II .
