Wilhelm von Jülich-Berg (born January 9, 1455 , † September 6, 1511 in Düsseldorf ) was Wilhelm III. Duke of Berg and as Wilhelm IV. Duke of Jülich and Count of Ravensberg .

Life

Wilhelm was the son of Duke Gerhard von Jülich-Berg and Sophie von Sachsen-Lauenburg . After the death of his father in 1475, he succeeded him.

In 1472 he married Countess Elisabeth von Nassau-Saarbrücken, the daughter of Johann von Nassau-Saarbrücken . She brought a rich inheritance into the marriage, but died in 1479. In 1481, Wilhelm married Sibylle von Brandenburg as his wife. Both marriages did not produce any sons, so that the problem of succession arose for Jülich-Berg-Ravensberg .

Therefore, the so-called Klever Union was established in 1496 and thus the connection of the duchies of Jülich-Berg (-Ravensberg) and Kleve-Mark to Jülich-Kleve-Berg was initiated: Wilhelm's only daughter, 5-year-old Maria , and 6-year-old Johann , The son and heir of Duke Johann II von Kleve were engaged to each other, and the wedding followed in 1510.

Wilhelm died in 1511 and Haus Jülich ended with him. He is buried as the last Bergisch ruler in Altenberg Cathedral . He was succeeded by his son-in-law Johann, who also inherited Kleve-Mark in 1521.
