Wilhelm jury

Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Jury (born May 13, 1763 in Berlin ; † June 21, 1829 there ) was a German painter , etcher and engraver .

Life

In 1779 - at the age of 16 - the jury became a pupil of the Berlin Academy and soon afterwards an apprentice at the local porcelain factory. From 1788 he learned his trade from Daniel Berger , who was already a well-known engraver back then.

In the following years, the jury created hundreds of different works; in particular he was known for his large number of copperplate engravings and his book illustrations, e. B. based on templates by Johann Heinrich Ramberg and Daniel Chodowiecki . At the time, illustrations were used to illustrate non-fiction books and novels. Even during his lifetime he was considered a "fashion artist" and was entrusted with a series of commissioned works.
